Raymond Meier's 25 Worst Votes #5: Nay On Campaign Finance Reform

Utica, NY - Today, the campaign of Democrat Mike Arcuri questioned six votes cast by Republican Raymond Meier against campaign finance reform packages in the state senate.

In 1999 and 2000, Meier voted against an up-or-down vote on campaign finance reform legislation that would have limit campaign contributions, banned soft money, and required improved disclosure of information about contributors. (S.3804, 1999; S.3804, 2000)

In 2000, Meier also opposed a vote on Governor Pataki's campaign finance reform package, whose provisions would have banned soft money, required disclosure of independent expenditures, and prohibited political fundraisers in Albany when the legislature was in session. (S.6750, 2000)

In 1998 and 1997, both on a party line votes, Meier opposed an up-or-down vote on a campaign finance law that would have mandated disclosure of the name, address, and amount of money bundled by a single donor. (S.3346, 1998; S.3346, 1997)

In 2002, on a party line vote, Meier failed to support a chance to have an up-or-down vote on another campaign finance reform bill. (S.2643, 2002)

"Time and time again, Raymond Meier has had the opportunity to reform our broken campaign finance system. Yet every opportunity, Meier has sided with big special interests and against central New York's hard-working, tax-paying families. Meier routinely brags about his years of experience in the state senate, and he has a lot of explaining to do," said Arcuri communications director Hayley Rumback. "Votes like these show how out of step Raymond Meier is with the 24th District."
